History Lectern Appeal

Clapham Common is the jewel in the crown of Clapham. It receives around 2 million visits ever year and everyone has their own reasons to love it, whether to celebrate, play, exercise or rest. Most people don’t know much about where the common comes from and why it looks the way it does.

There are some public notices scattered around giving snippets of historical information. One of them at the bandstand(pictured below) tells the story of that bandstand.

The lecterns are made of sturdy black powdered steel to resist both rust and graffiti so they will remain on site for several decades. Below is an example of what one of the new stories will look like.

If all of this sounds like a worthwhile project to you we really need your help to make it happen. The total cost of the design, build and installation is around £15,000. For every pound that you donate The Clapham Society will match the same amount. Between us we have a real opportunity to help the millions of users of Clapham Common have a better sense of the heritage and history of one of London’s great open spaces: Building pride and belonging to place that has been the site many great ventures in the past and a legacy for generations to come.
